Our Publishing Model
Community
backing
Our publishing model proudly builds upon the community-backing ethos of the groundbreaking COVID-19 publishing initiative Takeaway from Somekind Press.
At Jollof & Jambalaya Press, readers do not simply buy books — they join a cultural preservation network: a living archive of Black culinary knowledge, memory, and storytelling.
With this in mind, every title launches through a community-backing campaign. Each campaign directly supports:
-
author compensation
-
printing and production
-
contributor shares for editors, designers, photographers, and other creatives
-
future grants and book projects
-
community copies for bookstores, libraries, and culinary students.
Early and major backers will also receive public recognition for helping bring each project into the world.
Profit
sharing
Jollof & Jambalaya Press exists to circulate cultural wealth back into the communities, workers, storytellers, and spaces that generate it. Everyone who helps build one of our books participates in its cultural success. After crowdfunding fulfillment and direct production costs have been recouped — including printing, shipping, payment processing, and platform fees — net revenue from each title will be distributed as follows:
-
40% -- Author Share
-
30% -- Creative Team Pool -- Shared among editors, designers, illustrators, photographers, and other contributors for the first print run only
-
30% -- J&J Press Sustainability Fund -- Supporting future book projects, community copies, grants, bookstore partnerships, and long-term operational stability
*Creative team allocations are determined in advance on a per-project basis.*
