The Flower of the Tundra

The Flower of the Tundra is an essay collection built around Yuuyaraq — the Yup'ik way of being — moving in three parts: Past, Present, and Future. It carries readers from a fish camp on the Kuskokwim River to a tundra garden rebuilt after a flood, and from a foggy field at Palmer Hay Flats to a kitchen in New Orleans. At its center is a question the author's uncle once asked her: Kituusit — who are you? Rooted in food, land, and language, the book is a reclamation — of foodways, of naming, and of a Yup'ik and Black woman's right to tell her own story on her own terms.
